Update on Federal Lawsuit Against Oregon Custody Law

Hi Friends and Supporters,

I’m writing to update you on a major step in the federal lawsuit I filed to challenge the constitutionality of ORS § 107.169(3), Oregon’s custody law. The law prevents judges from ordering joint custody even when both parents are deemed fit and share equal parenting time.

On January 9th, the State Attorney General was officially served with the complaint (Case No. 3:24-CV-2157-IM). Over the next few weeks, the State is expected to respond, and I’ll share updates as the case progresses.

This case isn’t just about my family—it’s about advocating for fairer custody laws for all Oregonians. If you or someone you know has been impacted by Oregon’s custody laws, or if you have experience in constitutional or family law, please reach out. I’m actively seeking pro bono assistance and would appreciate any recommendations or referrals.

Thank you for your support,

John
